Bruce Guynn returns to the airwaves with a new album Footprints. It's an eight song set of primarily acoustic songs cut from the 70's singer songwriter cloth. To quote Bruce... "It continues the conversation of life in today’s times. The album is really about the simple things in life we may have forgotten. Like sitting on the sand watching the waves roll in and out while the tide rolls in. Lost and refound love. Picking up the pieces to carry on. Memories of great times. Disagreement. Society divides. True love and the wisdom we acquire along the way."
The first single and opening track Angel In My Room comes in with a well pocketed drum beat with lots of room mic vibe and a strong harmonized chorus. To start the track with the chorus reminds this writer of the early Beatles music where the hook is introduced and sunk right from the jump. It was a great production decision. Bruce's beautifully unique vocal is instantly identifiable, setting the pace for what is to come throughout the entirety of the release.
Tide Rolls In is a softer side of Guynn and the band compared to the opening cut. Lyrically, the song paints a vivid picture that takes the listener to the shoreline where the ocean has the hypnotic power to conjure up philosophical emotions. The lyric "Footprints in the sand, footprints in the sky / Like a wounded bird who only wants to fly / A guitar with an old soul can really cry" weaves the big picture thoughts and the immediacy of open wounds into one concise thought that we can all understand as adults.
A standout track is Today These Days. It has an interesting and unexpected drum part that somehow fits perfectly, adding a bit of spice to the whole thing. The song features well executed vocal harmonies and more great production choices. It is a slow and steady build that eventually crescendos to an almost Peter Gabriel like performance on the outro. It was a great choice for the closing song on the album as it feels like a very natural goodbye.
This is the second Bruce Guynn album that I have had the pleasure to review and there is an obvious evolution. Fans of the classic singer / songwriters will definitely find a lot to like about this album. The decision to keep it to 8 songs was a good one. It is a very comfortable listen that doesn't overstay its welcome or overstate the messages contained lyrically. Bruce Guynn and the songs have a voice that is uniquely his own and passionate. I hope it finds the listeners it deserves.

What do you like most about your new album?
How I was able to write it and we put it together in a much shorter time than past albums without cutting any corners with the highest level of creativity. The ideas and improvisations that just happened in the moment. And that it feels good, like our and my best work.
What inspires you to write the music you write?
I am inspired by how stories are told through poetry and music, and when something new just happens musically. Also when said through music how people listen without judgement. How some things said in person would piss people off. But, when said through music they hear it in a different way through feelings that touch their hearts and minds.
Describe your creative process when you write new music.
It’s about putting feelings with words and music together with a message and story. A puzzle that comes together that tells you oh ya that's it tell me more.
Sometimes I hear the music in dreams before it has been written.
