Thankfully, this is the second David G Smith album to come onto my radar. It is a twelve song set clocking in at 44 minutes. David has a naturally mildly raspy voice with seasoning to spare. There is a patience in his music that is as lazy as a moving river that is perhaps not as perceptible on the surface, but make no mistake, the current below is strong and will pull you in.
The album starts with the title cut Hero Street, an acoustic piece that is musically quite calm and lyrically screaming about the downtrodden. David is a great storyteller at his core. A poet put to melody. There is something very calming about his approach to music. He has his own fingerprint, but it stays accessible to the casual listener with sweet vocals and solid hooks. This song was a perfect choice to open the record with.
Green Fire is a standout track that pulled this writer in right from the first note. David's vocal performance simply emotes, which is a rare thing these days in the climate of pristine recordings with pitch correction and razor like edits. It is his looseness that is so intoxicating. His lyrics and music are a fantastic match for his smoky voice, reminiscent of Mark Knopfler, in the sense that the music and the voice make a comfortable pair of old shoes.
The closing track Hymn To Humanity initially caught my eye based on a cool title and then sealed the deal with a wonderful closing cut to this record. It is the embodiment of what is Americana music in this day and age. Subtle instrumentation, thought provoking lyrics and relaxed mature vocals. It is the kind of music that is written by adults for adults. It has mileage, which is what separates the men from the boys and this fine artist has clearly lived some life.
This record is a fine complement to David G Smith's last album Witness Trees. This one took a different direction than his previous, but equally potent. So many artists find a formula that works for them and then struggle to stray from it, instead choosing to recycle the same recipe that is clearly a comfort zone. David G Smith has the courage to stretch and broaden the horizon for both himself and the listener. This new release is an exceptional piece of Americana music. Give it a listen. It will be time well spent!
