Stacy Robin is a singer, songwriter, percussionist, scientist, mother, animal rescuer and social activist. Quite a sentence! We are here to talk about her record Where Truth Lies, a 12 song set that clocks in at 48 minutes. After multiple listens to the entirety of the release I struggle to narrow it down to one genre. It has a Beatles Sgt Peppers vibe mixed with some classic folk leanings and more than a pinch of 90's indie rock. But it really doesn't sound like anybody. This alone is an impressive accomplishment.
Track 1, Sing To My Heart sets the table for the seven course musical meal that is to come. How Stacy and her band of musicians use the different colors of the many instruments is really something to behold. The song is in its own class, much like The Who, Queen or U2. Not so much in style but in originality. Each one of those bands leaves astute listeners wondering who influenced them. Stacy Robin has that same charming mystery in her compositions and performance.
The Other Side is a track that reminds me most of the 90's sound that artists like Natalie Merchant and The Cranberries sold millions of records with. It's soft indie rock, with memorable melodies and fantastic harmonies. Stacy's vocal has that Natalie Merchant warmth and depth with every syllable. Her performance is relaxed and endearing throughout. A fantastic track from start to finish.
Love Of Mine starts out feeling like a modern Nashville production, but very quickly turns back to the core sound that makes this record such an interesting listen. It is the way that the harmony vocal parts are used that is so compelling. They are woven so tightly like a string section and used as the centerpiece versus garnish. Much like the way that bands like The Little River Band and The Bee Gees used harmonies. They were far more than background vocals. Background vocals mean just that... in the background. In the case of Stacy Robin the harmonies are at the forefront which is a rare production decision that has paid off huge on this record
This is a fiercely interesting record. It is one of those albums that the more you listen to it the better it gets. I think that is true of all artists that are this unique. It takes a few listens to understand the vision and the language of the compositions and performers. Once your ears are dialed into their wavelength is when it all starts to gel into a cohesive wonderful record. I hope that she finds the audience that understands and embraces her unique vision and beautiful voice. It is one that deserves attention.
